Between Breno and Bienno
In the "valle dei magli"
From the centre of Breno, cross over the state road running alongside the Town Hall, uphill towards the Croce Domini.
After an initial steep slope, the climb becomes easier and in sequence, you pass the ancient parish church of San Maurizio and the 15th century sanctuary of San Valentino.
Leaving behind the small hamlet of Pescarzo, the panorama becomes increasingly wider featuring Breno and the Castle, the middle valley, the course of the river Oglio and the Concarena; you now find yourselves, as indicated by the signs, near the confines of the Adamello Park, which includes some of the most beautiful valleys and mountains on the Brescia side of the group of mountains bearing the same name.
After leaving the small hamlet of Astrio as well, you come to a fork in the road: on the left, the fittest of us are offered the opportunity to climb up the Valle delle Valli again to the Croce Domini Pass, the others can go right down to Bienno.
In Bienno you can visit the historic town centre with its buildings and medieval towers, and the parish church of Santa Maria, where you can admire the frescoes by Romanino and Pietro da Cemmo.
After passing Bienno and going down towards Breno, another worthy stop-off is the sanctuary of the Santa Maria Maddalena with its magnificent gilded statue" of Christ the King, and the Monastery of Saints Peter and Paul.
The last stretch of the descent shows us the full grandeur of the Breno Castle that was built in different periods and bears witness to ancient history. |
